  • What is a Soapnut?

    The Soapnut is the fruit from a tree (Sapindus Mukorossi) which grows in India and Nepal. The nut is the dried fruit of the Rittha tree, a species of trees native to India and the lower forests of Nepal.


    What are Soapnuts be used for?

    Soap nuts economical alternative to laundry soap, shampoo, skin cleanser, insecticidal soap, dishwashers, all purpose cleaner, fruit & vegi wash, glass cleaner and hand soap.  Soapnuts are truly a multipurpose item.


    How do Soapnuts work?

    The shell of the nut contains saponins which are released in the presence of warm or hot water.


    I have sensative skin, can I still use Soapnuts?

    Absolutely!  Because they are natural, they have proven especially good for babies and those with eczema and sensitive skin. People with allergies or dermatitis can do their washing with the nuts as clothes cleaned this way do not irritate the skin or cause itching the way commercial detergents can.


    Does it matter if my Soapnuts are broken?

    No, broken shells actually work better when more of it comes in contact with the water.


    Are Soapnuts safe for people who have nut allergies?

    Yes, Soapnuts are not really nuts but fruit. People with nut allergies can use them safely.


    How do I wash laundry with Soapnuts?

    To wash you need 4-5 Soapnuts shells; simply place them in the muslin bag provided (or a tied sock) and wash as normal. Or you can use 3 Tablespoons of soapnut liquid for a large load.


    Are Soapnuts safe for my colored laundry?

    Soap nuts also preserve the colours of fabric better than commercial detergents. Whites may become slightly grey after extended use but this effect can be mitigated with the use of an oxy whitener (sodium percarbonate) which is also safe for the environment. Sodium Percarbonate is a biodegradable laundry product which breaks down into water, oxygen, and soda ash.


    Do I still need to use fabric softener?

    The nuts also soften clothes, so a fabric softener is not necessary!


    Can I add scent to my Soapnuts?

    You may add a few drops of essential oil to your laundry.


    What do Soapnuts smell like?

    Soapnuts have a mild vinegar smell. When doing laundry your clothes will not retain this smell and will be scent-free. If you wish to add scent simply add a few drops of essential oils of your choice.


    Are Soapnuts safe for my washing machine?

    Yes! Soapnuts are a natural product so it prolongs you washing machines life. It will strip away any chemical residues left in your machine. It is also safe for (HE) high efficiency washing machines because it is low sudsing.


    Can I use the Soapnut shells more than once?

    You may be able to use your shells more than once but this all depends on the water temperature you are washing with. Washing with cooler water allows you to be able to use it more than once. You will know your shells will need to be replaced with they become soft.


    Do Soapnuts go "bad"?

    No. But they should be stored in an airtight container or bag. When they are exposed to air they become sticky and dark from absorbing moisture. This still doesn't change their ability to clean.


    Why don't Soapnuts produce alot of suds?

    Soapnuts are a natural product that doesn't have the chemical sudsing agents found in "mainstream" cleaners. Suds are not necessary to clean well; they are purely cosmetic.


    How do I make Soapnut liquid?

    Take a handful (50g) of crushed shells and add to 6 cups of water. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes. (This process takes the saponin from the nut shells.) Strain into a container and let cool.


     


     


    How do I use Soapnuts in my dishwasher?

    You can fill the soap dispenser with Soapnut liquid (How do I make Soapnut liquid?) Or you can simply place a few shells in the cutlery tray.
